How Long Does Ceramic Coating Actually Last? A London Owner's Guide
If you've had ceramic coating applied - or you're weighing it up - the question that matters most isn't "does it work", it's "how long will it actually hold up on my car, on London roads, in London weather?"
The honest answer: it depends on the prep, the product, and how the car is looked after afterwards - but a professionally applied coating, done properly, should give you 18 to 24 months of real protection before it needs topping up or reapplying.
What "lasting" actually means
Ceramic coating doesn't wear off like wax does. It bonds to the clear coat and forms a hard, glass-like layer. What changes over time isn't that the coating "comes off" - it's that its hydrophobic performance gradually weakens. You'll notice it as fewer tight water beads, water sheeting instead of beading, and the paint taking slightly longer to dry after a wash. That's the coating telling you it's nearing the end of its cycle, not failing.
The three things that decide how long yours will last
1. Paint preparation. This is the single biggest factor, and it's also the one most DIY and budget applications skip. A coating applied over paint that still has embedded contamination, old wax, or swirl marks will fail early because it's bonding to a compromised surface rather than clean clear coat. 2. Where the car lives. 3. How it's washed. Ceramic coating doesn't mean "never wash it" or "never think about it again" - it means the car stays cleaner for longer and is easier to wash safely. Automatic car washes with brushes are the fastest way to shorten a coating's life. A pH-neutral hand wash, every few weeks, is what actually protects your investment.
Signs it's time to refresh
Slower water beading, streaking rather than sheeting, and paint that picks up dirt and grime faster than it used to are the clearest signs your coating is winding down. At that point a maintenance wash and a fresh top-up layer - rather than a full re-decontamination and reapplication - is usually enough, provided the base coating was applied correctly the first time.
